If you'd like to have a beautifully manicured lawn without
raking, sweeping or collecting clippings, then a mulching
package is the answer for you.
Saves Clean Up Time
You can eliminate clean-up on sidewalks, drives and
borders by mulching, in lieu of side discharging. Mulching
directs clippings downward into the grass bed, rather than
onto areas that you want to keep clean.
Provides Greater Maneuverability
Using the mulching package, you have trimability on both
sides of the deck. This allows you greater flexibility
with your mowing patterns and in some cases, allows you to
maneuver between narrower openings.
Creates A Healthier Lawn
When grass clippings decompose, they return nutrients to
the soil. The decomposed clippings form humus which helps
loosen hard soils and makes more oxygen and nutrients
available to grass roots. It also enriches sandy soil and
helps it hold moisture better.
The smaller clippings produced by the mulching package
decompose more readily than other clippings. The
additional level of microorganisms at work on the mulched
clippings have been shown to suppress certain grass
diseases and reduce mold spore counts.
And here's a surprise -- mulching reduces thatch, and
doesn't cause thatch buildup. The microorganisms that
thrive on decomposing mulched clippings also do a good job
breaking down thatch.
Perhaps the most important criteria of all, is how great
your lawn looks after mulching. By improving the texture
and content of the soil, and reducing diseases and thatch,
the end result of Down Discharge™ Mulching is a fuller,
healthier looking lawn.
Handle Clippings Three Ways With
The Same Deck
Thanks to the DuraMax™ Deck, conversion to side discharge
is easy -- just remove the discharge restriction plate and
the left and right shrouds (two bolts each under the
deck), and attach the discharge deflector to disperse
clippings evenly. Or add the PowerVac Collection System™
with your choice of collectors for a clean sweep of
clippings and other debris. Any way you go, you leave a
manicured look.
Mulching Tips
Follow these simple steps, to produce beautiful mulching
results:
- Follow the"one-third" rule. Never cut more than the top
third of the grass.
- Mow grass about one-half inch higher than you would
normally mow when side discharging or vacuuming.
- Keep mower blades sharp. Mulching tends to dull blades
faster than other methods of mowing. Sharpen them more
often, if necessary.
- Water lawn after mulching, not before. Dry clippings
disperse easier than moist ones. Watering after the lawn
has been mulched helps clippings settle better and
speeds up decomposition.
- Reduce fertilizer ratios. The clippings you give back to
the lawn, return nitrogen and other nutrients to the
soil.
- Use the proper blades. Don't be fooled by discount store
"mulching" blades. Only the proper combination of air
flow, chamber design, deflectors and blades will produce
optimum mulching results. Grasshopper's DuraMax™ Decks
are shipped with the proper blades. Consult your
Grasshopper dealer if you're uncertain.
